DC Girl In York

The times and trials of a college student raised in a city, attending a university in a small town. Life is better when you are in letters. ΦΣΣ.
There is something about a lake that calms the soul. Spending all day on a boat and enjoying dinner on a dock that is just as nice as your home will never be more perfect. Good friends, perfect weather, a sweet escape.

Second week slum…

The second week of my internship started off with a rainy monday that brought nothing but unfamiliar faces and awkward conversations. Since I was one of the few who had returned from university early and had the time to start work early, I had adjusted to only have two other co-workers in the office. Now, there are 8 of us, with 6 more on the way. I feel like an expecting parent, anxiously waiting the arrival of my newest children. That was an extremely crappy metaphor.

Anyways, there wasn’t much going on this week. Most of the days I spent facebook chatting with my grandbig, remembering all the dumb things we did when she came to visit twice in april, what to buy my man for his birthday (in october), and planning a weekend for me to visit. When I wasn’t talking to my grandbig, which is about 90% of the time, I was “out in the community” attempting to collect donations for raffles. Well since my boss(s) are unorganized, incompetent, and annoying, the document I requested on tuesday was only finalized this afternoon, and won’t get to printing until mid-week next week because everyone is on holiday.

I was extremely excited about my internship last week because there was work to be done and there weren’t an unneccessary amount of people in the office at one time. Also, it was comfortable with just the girls since we know how to work well together and we are good at what we do.

Thankfully I have decided that since my internship is not going to do much for my resume, I wlil be taking it down to a part-time position so I can work my old job in retail, and hopefully pick up another job in the same shopping complex so I can just be making money left and right.

Anyways, I can’t wait to get back to the lake this weekend, turn off my phone, and relax. There is something about laying on a dock, hearing the water crash underneath of you that is soothing for the soul. I haven’t been able to get down to the house for quite sometime now but now I’m finally able to enjoy.

I hope y’all have a safe and wonderful memorial day weekend! Take the time this weekend to thank someone in the armed forces for all they do/have done for this country! God Bless America!

XOXO -K

Hitting it out of the ballpark my first week on the job!

This week was my first week in my internship with the Bethesda Big Train Summer Collegiate Baseball Program! I wasn’t supposed to start working until tomorrow (May 21) but with the program hosting a celebrity chartiy softball tournament today, my boss(s) needed all the help they could get.

The week started on tuesday, promptly at 10 am, wtih a briefing on what the week would entail. From there it went into editing player bio’s, organizing celeberity lists, and beginning the never ending process of downloading music for the actual event.

Wednesday brought in more help, man power, brains to pick, and more music downloading. The player bio’s for the college athlete’s arriving in two weeks were finished and it was onto creating the script that would be read during the celeb game introductions. The music downloading is a nightmare and I now have the highest level of respect for the people who work the music during an sporting event because it is no easy task!

Thursday was full of more music downloading, sorting through player equipment, making sure everything was counted for all the celeb’s arriving, and cleaning the press box.

Friday was crunch time and everyone was on pins and needles. It was the last day we had before the event sunday morning and everything needed to be perfect. The uniforms were placed out on display, the office was cleaned even more, the music playlists were completed, and the new office table was being set up. There was no turning back, sunday was rapidly approaching and everything was completed.

This morning (Sunday, May 20) started exactly at 10 am and we utilized every minute we had before the celebrities started arriving. As the designated DJ for the event, I was also assigned to check in the celebrities when they arrived on site. It was an amazing experience because I got to meet and personally talk to every celebrity on a level that most people didn’t get. I got to joke with them, talk about sports with them, and tease them about who was going to win the game. I was also thrilled to meet Walt Williams (pictured above) who used to play for the University of Maryland Men’s Basketball team. He is my favorite player of all time and I was shaking I was so nervous when I met him. Along with Walt, I had the honor of meeting Laron Profit, Sean Mosley, and Byron Mouton, all UMD Basketball legends.

I couldn’t have asked for a better first week at my internship and I am excited for the rest of the season! For now, I am relaxing the rest of this beautiful sunday away and getting ready to get back in the press box tomorrow and start planning for our season opener on June 8!

Go Big Train!

I love the fact that our song is ‘La Vie En Rose.” I couldn’t be happier.

I am not the same girl I was 15 months ago, and I will never be the girl I was before the tragedy. But I will be the girl who uses everything in my past to propel me towards my future. I may not be the smartest or best looking, I may not be the most comical or the best athlete, but I am a damn good person and I am that way because of the lessons I learned while I had still had him in my life. Death does not mean the end, but the start of a new beginning, the start of the journey you were prepared to take on your own, by the one who left. I believe that people come into your life for a reason, and once that purpose is served, they leave you to understand fully all the wonderful things they taught you. There are no true endings in life because once you let someone in, you will forever carry a piece of them with you, along with them always carrying a piece of you. Nothing is ever forgotten; empathy does not allow that to happen.”

Getting back into the game.

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to sit down, sort through my thoughts, and enjoy my blog. I stated the 30 day challenege again because I thought that I would be a ble to devote more time to it, but once again I was wrong.

The beginning of a new semester always brings new hopes, dreams, and ambitions. And then the month of March hits and everything you hoped for in the semester goes down the drain. And if you are in a sorority, you know exactly what I’m talking about. The social calender in March is absurd and time consuming. And if social events weren’t enough to keep us busy, business projects and philantropy events sure as hell will. And all of this is also happening while you’re still enrolled as a full-time student at your university.

The reason I’m actually able to sit down and write today is because I’ve sneaked away to my aunts house in a small town in PA; taking care of her precious dogs while her and her husband are away for the weekend. It’s the perfect getaway from the insanity of York.

So as I sit her crafting for my little, preparing for my marketing exam on monday, and researching summer internships, I’m happy for the quiet house I have all to myself.
